The predecessor of Manhattanville College was the Female Academy of the Sacred Heart established in New York City in 1841. It became a four-year undergraduate school in 1917; moved to its present site on the former Whitelaw Reid estate in Purchase, N.Y. in 1952; and in 1971 the college became co-educational and independent of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
